The Mother of Us All
Vocal Auditions: May 13, 14, 20
Stage Direction by R. B. Schlather
Seeking Hudson Valley residents interested in participating in a new production of Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein’s The Mother of Us All, a musical theater pageant about Susan B. Anthony and the Women’s Suffrage movement in America, which began in upstate New York. Previous operatic experience is not necessary; anyone with a talent for singing music of all styles is welcome to audition.
Conceived by Hudson-based stage director R. B. Schlather, and produced in partnership with the Millay Colony, this November 2017 production being mounted commemorates the 2017 Centenary of the Women’s Suffrage movement. Anthony spoke twice on the very stage where this new production will be performed, the first time to lecture about slavery, and the second time to rally support for women’s suffrage.
The Mother of Us All is a two-act, English language Opera about life in 19th Century America, with real and imagined characters. Schlather reimagines this historical work as a relatable contemporary pageant about navigating daily social and political life, activated by artistic collaborations with Hudson Valley residents. For this project, he is joined on the artistic staff by Musical Director Tony Kieraldo, Dramaturg and Stein Scholar Joan Retallack, Set and Costume Designer Marsha Ginsburg, and Lighting Director Jax Messenger, and will be performed by a vocal and instrumental ensemble of residents from the Hudson Valley.
To audition, email firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule a 15-minute time slot on either Saturday, May 13, 2–6pm; Sunday, May 14, 2–6pm; or Saturday, May 20, 2–8pm. Please bring two English language songs with sheet music (arias, musical theater or pop songs welcome) to demonstrate your vocal range. An accompanist will be provided.
